Colours In The Air

On the momentous fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Handel Street Projects is pleased to present a selection of striking images by artists David Batchelor, Richard Deacon and Fedja Klikovac.

Since the day of Putin’s criminal attack on 24th February 2022, the artists have been collecting photographs of places and situations where, by chance, the yellow and blue colours of Ukrainian flag appear. It didn’t start with a plan, but the sharing of images – there are now over 200 images in the series – led to the idea of an exhibition. Colours In The Air was first shown as a set of prints at Handel Street Projects in London, in 2023. It was intended as a fund-raising exhibition on the first anniversary of the invasion.

With the kind support of Landsec, we are now very pleased to present this body of work as a monumental open-air projection at Piccadilly Lights in Piccadilly Circus. The screening will take place from 6pm and will last for 10 minutes. Prints of individual images will again be available in support of the Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund.

We celebrate Ukrainian resistance in the face of brutal aggression. Their determination, inventiveness and heroism have rewritten how wars can be fought. The Ukrainian Navy, without a single capital ship to its command, has defeated the Russian navy driven it from its Crimean stronghold and broken the stranglehold on shipments from Ukrainian ports on land, Russian losses of men and materiel have been huge, with over a million killed or injured and, perhaps, 7000 tanks destroyed. The expansion of drone capabilities has rendered it nigh impossible for the aggressor to muster sufficient force for an assault. Russian human rights abuses during and after combat are rife. These include the murder of civilians and of prisoners of war, the shelling of civilian targets, the kidnapping and trafficking of Ukrainian children.

The toll on Ukraine has also been huge. The country, its people, its government and its vibrant culture needs and deserves our solidarity and support.

We need to think about future, to help Ukrainians think about their country post-war. Too many countries fight wars only to be disappointed, even when they win. This war should end with a prosperous, democratic Ukraine within their internationally recognised borders, on its way into European Union.

Slava Ukraini!

The artists and Handel Street Projects would like to thank Landsec for their kind support.
